Want to Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The Inca Trail is one of the most well-known trails in Peru, if not the world—and rightfully so. This ancient trekking trail winds through lush jungles, past terraced ruins, and up high passes into the cloud-capped mountains. Hikers will gasp for breath at the stunning Dead Woman’s Pass (13,828 feet) and stare in awe at Winay Huayna, an archaeological site only three miles away from Machu Picchu. These ruins sit on a steep hillside overlooking the Urubamba River. As the Inca Trail culminates at the Sun Gate, trekkers catch their first sight of this ancient citadel below, nestled in a notch in the ridge amidst the vast Andes mountain range.

However, the Classic Inca Trail route is a 3 to 5 day hike, and on average, it takes 4 days and 3 nights to reach Machu Picchu. For those short on time, there is a shorter route to Machu Picchu. This trek starts at Kilometer 104 on the Trail and only takes one day to hike to Machu Picchu.

Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Day

The 4-day Classic Inca Trail is a hiking route that runs through part of the ‘qhapac ñan’, ancient Inca trails that were built by the Incas. Today there are 39 kilometers of these roads enabled by the Peruvian State for the famous route of the ‘Inca Trail’, from km 89 of the railway to Aguas Calientes to Intipunku, the ancient gateway to Machu Picchu used by the Incas. The route can only be done with an authorized tour which includes camping, porters equipment, cook equipment, tour guide, entrance fees and more….

Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2 Days

The 2-day Short Inca Trail is a hiking route that runs through the last kilometers of the famous Classic Inca Trail route. The walk begins at kilometer 104 of the railroad that leads to the town of Aguas Calientes. After approximately 12 kilometers of walking, the archaeological site of Wiñayhuayna is crossed to finally arrive at Machu Picchu (which will be visited the next day more calmly). INCA TRAIL PERMITS SPECIAL NOTE

Such is the popularity of the classic Inca Trail the numbers of trekkers is controlled by the Peruvian government and permits are limited to 500 people per day. Of these 500 permits approximately 200 are allocated to tourists and 300 to porters, cooks and guides. Permits go on sale in January each year and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Each year we see the permits sell out more quickly than the year before with popular dates selling out immediately. For this reason we strongly recommend that you book one year in advance to be sure of a place.
